Storing your precious items Do not use paper boxes! Paper disintegrates over time and if the items are not wrapped properly inside the box, dust and whatever else will accumulate inside. Depending upon the condition of your attic, basement, or storage facility, plastic containers, trunks (an age-old favorite) are best. Metal, non-warpable containers and cabinets are good too if your storage area is dry. Plastic containers come in all sizes and some have wheels. Many are stackable. When stacking, make certain to stack with the heaviest container on the bottom, something lighter on top of that, and so on. The lightest weight container should be on top -- this will prevent the containers from collapsing. The plastic containers with a snap close top are the best. Wrapping the items for storage Make certain the items are wrapped well individually before placing in a container. If you are storing paper items, be sure the storage area is temperature controlled -- paper does yellow with age and could disintegrate. Be careful of using plastic bags with paper items and other material -- some plastic bags will cling to the item or retain moisture. Check with experts especially if you have a valuable, or potentially valuable collection. Old towels and old, ripped t-shirts are wonderful for wrapping (and shipping) fragile items. T-shirts are soft and will protect most metals. Old towels, along with bubble wrap, give added buffering when shipping.
