Get yourself a loose leaf binder -- its sturdy and the pages are easy to sort or remove.  Since binders come in various sizes you can decide how large (wide) your binder should be and you can also add various type of section dividers.

Paper lists can be formally bound either plastic spiral binding or a schoolbook (tape) type binding.  If you decide to formally bind your lists, you will not easily be able to add or edit the list(s).

You can also use page protectors to protect the paper and photos.

It will be easier to divide the the pages by section subjects.  For example,  "Pottery, Glass," "Silverware," "Books," "Person's Name,"  "Home," "Kitchen," etc.  If you have organized your items (see Treasure Hunt Series), everything will be together and this will become an easy task.

Use a horizontal, landscape layout -- you will be able to get more on a page.

Here are some "musts" the need to be included:

  1. Section Title - This needs to be included and goes at the very top of page in the upper left corner.
  2. Item Title - Put the item title under the section title .
  3. Date - Put the date in upper right corner (this will remind you, or anyone who looks at the list when the list was created and whether any of the information has become outdated.)
  4. Photos - At least one clear photograph of the item, but preferably more than one that shows some detail, condition, special markings, and other views (for example a back view).  If the photograph is large or there are more than one photographs, it will be easier to paste the photos on separate pages BUT, include the item name and date at the top as described above and keep these pages together with the information page.  You may want to staple these pages together.
  5. The Item's History and Details - when it was obtained, who gave it to you (or whomever) or where it was purchased, and any other detail you can provide (...it is part of a collection, it was my mother's favorite...things of this nature).  The more information you provide, the greater the interest to anyone who looks at these lists.  It can, if done well become something to copy and pass along with the item.
  6. If you bought the item, how much it cost and where you bought the item and, if the packaging is the original.
  7. Current value of the object, if known.  There are many way to find the current value and this site will help you do that.
